Microsoft uses SharePoint BI to proactively monitor various Online Properties

Microsoft Global Foundation Services (GFS) is the engine that powers Microsoft’s Software Plus Services strategy, hosting more than 200 of the company’s online services and web portals. We focus on smart growth, high efficiency, and delivering a trusted experience to customers and partners worldwide.

Situation
The Global Foundation Services Group is responsible for maintaining the health of various Microsoft properties. These properties, including Window Live and Entertainment & Devices, are increasingly crucial to Microsoft’s online presence.

Top-level management needed the capability to view up-to-date, relevant dashboards and scorecards depicting the health of these properties. More than an overview, these dashboards and scorecards would need the capability to quickly drill-down into the data. The reports generated would need to be available to management via the dashboard as well as by email and RSS.

Solution
The solution was comprised of various components, such as a custom built datawarehouse which aggregated data in various formats and sources.
The back-end was a custom built data warehouse built on top of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Microsoft PerformancePoint Server 2007 for the creation of scorecards, KPIs and dashboard pages published to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007

  • Added the Reporting Services for SharePoint Server 2007 to provide rich report management, security, subscription and publishing capabilities Planned SharePoint 2007
  • Farm logical and physical design, SQL Server 2008, and PerformancePoint Server 2007 infrastructure
  • Assisted in the strategic approach to develop and publish scorecards and KPIs based on PerformancePoint Server 2007 using the PerformancePoint Scorecard Designer 2007
  • Integrated Reporting Services add-in for SharePoint 2007 to provide rich report publishing and subscription capabilities
  •
