Symantec Finance Group deploys Portal based on SharePoint 2007 

 

 

Symantec is a global leader in infrastructure software, enabling businesses and consumers to have confidence in a connected world. The company helps customers protect their infrastructure, information, and interactions by delivering software and services that address risks to security, availability, compliance and performance. Headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., Symantec has operations in more than 40 countries.
 
Situation
Symantec’s Finance Group was desperately in need of a solution that would allow them to share various financial reports that were being generated by internal applications such as the Oracle Hyperion Suite of Tools.  Having up to date reports that were searchable was crucial to budgeting and forecasting managers.
 
In addition, the Finance Group needed to establish a portal to communicate a report-publishing schedule and application maintenance downtime.  A key goal was to ensure users with proper privileges would have the ability to update content such as news, calendars, reports, policies, and various sections of the Portal.  In order to ensure regulatory compliance, Symantec’s Finance Group needed to ensure all content updates be reviewed prior to going live.
 
 
Solution
SharePointAce designed a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Publishing Portal with custom reports to meet the necessary features and functionality.  Working closely with stakeholders, we:
 
  • Implemented Web Content Management using MOSS 2007 out of the box features 
  • Configured Excel Services to publish key reports that were generated from Oracle Hyperion 
  • Configured content approval workflows for all content updates 
  • Implemented security using SharePoint Groups that mapped to Active Directory Groups 
  • Designed the portal to overall empower users to manage their content and delegate publishing rights to other users as needed 
  • Wrote a custom utility to import Excel financial reports to specific Report Libraries that were published nightly by other internal applications
     
 
Benefits
With the new Portal in place, all business stakeholders and managers now have a single source for business intelligence and reports.  By having reports automatically published by background applications, staff members are able to focus on more critical business tasks.  Overall, productivity was increased across the organization.
